This small country town has thousands of visitors each year, arriving en masse in the summer to feast the eyes on Perito Moreno the huge glacier which is the only one in the world that is still growing. The glacier, more than 50 meters high, is one of the many relics of the Ice Age that can be found the vicinity, and is tha main attraction of the Glacier National Park.
Wild mountain scenery, majestic cliffs, glaciers and lakes: this is the Fitz Roy Mountain region. It’s peak is “only “ 3375m above sea level, but the cliff itself is a steep wall hundreds of meters high. Near Fitz Roy Iooms another imposing cliff: Cerro Torre (3128m), not quite as high as Fitz Roy but no less impressive.
Access to Fitz Roy is complicated. It´s a remote area and the nearest settlement is El Chalten, the mecca for those who love to camp, hike, climb or just hang out. One popular hike goes to Laguna Torre, which is the base camp for skilled technical climbers attempting the spire of Cerro Torre.
