| Information about Córdoba Argentina |
Córdoba disputes with Rosario for the title of being the second largest town in Argentina, with its million inhabitants, and important commercial and economic center. The main tourist attractions are not in the city itself but in the province, especially for those seeking health tourism in the lakes and the hills.
The modern office towers that have sprung up over the last decades have almost entirely replaced the colonial buildings, which now lie in the shadows of these giant new edificies. In the downtown area we can see the main remnants of bygone days. These can be found principally around the Plaza San Martín, with the old Cabildo (colonial Town Council), which now serves as HQ of the provincial police force, and the old Cathedral consacrated in 1872, its main tower dating from 1752. Many figures of the country´s history are buried here. Behind it are the Santa Catalina Moanstery and the residence of the Bishop, where the Tourist Information Center operates.
One block from here, is the house which belonged to the later Viceroy, built in 1712, perhaps the most beautiful colonial building house in town; it is now the site of the Provincial Historical Museum. |
