The heart of the city, the attractive Plaza 9 de Julio, with its arched buildings, is visited day and night; it houses the Government buildings and the beautiful Cathedral. Its impressive interior and the estatues of Jesus and Mary, around which many legends have grown, make it into an increasingly important historical site. On the other side of the square is the Cabildo, the town council, the oldest building in the city. The building houses two museums: the Historical Museum and the Regional Art Museum.
A block from the square, at the corner of Caseros St and Cordoba St, is the magnificent church of San Francisco, which also dates back to the origins of the town. The San Martin Park, opposite the bus station, is popular with both children and adults in the afternoons, which is the best time to visit it.
On the outskirts of the city is an interesting but relatively expensive Crafts Market, mainly for tourists (buses 2 and 3 from the centre will take you there). The shops opposite the mail building are marginally cheaper.
Salta has a varied folklore, influenced by the popular music and costumes of her northern neighbour (Bolivia). A folklore event is a must while you are here. Details can be obtained at hostels or the Tourist Office.
A special and fascinating trip is the Tren a las Nubes (Train to the clouds), from Salta to San Antonio de los Cobres and to the Polvorillas viaduct, 63 meters high and 250 meters long. The round trip takes 14 hours, only once a week from May to November. You will enjoy great views and admire the engineering operation, with tunnels, zigzags and viaducts. |
